Suwanee Today
Today, Suwanee's "downtown" encompasses two distinct, vibrant areas: historic Old Town with a quaint commercial area along Main Street and the nearly completed award-winning Town Center.A vibrant mixed-use area, anchored by a 10-acre urban-style park, Town Center embodies Suwanee's vision for "live...work...play...shop." First envisioned in 2002, Suwanee's built-from-scratch Town Center has quickly become the physical and symbolic heart of our community. Town Center represents a bold and innovative response to two distinct community goals: to preserve open space and create more parks as well as to assemble an aesthetically appealing downtown and community gathering place.
The Town Center project is a public-private partnership that envelopes more than 63 acres, including a 40-acre privately developed traditional neighborhood (Shadowbrook at Town Center). When completed later this year, Town Center will encompass more than 100,000 square feet of retail space, 87,000 square feet of office space, 147 townhome and condominium units, 85 single-family homes, and the 10-acre Town Center Park.
Opened in December 2003, Town Center Park functions as Suwanee's "front yard" and primary gathering place. Its classic and attractive design, which features three interlinking walkways, the largest interactive fountain in Gwinnett County, large open areas, and a performance stage with a 1,000-seat terraced amphitheater area, make Town Center Park ideal for community gatherings. Town Center is also home to Suwanee's City Hall, opened in February 2009.
Take a stroll down historic Main Street and relish in the history of our community. Check out the caboose and watch a train go by. Visit the friendly merchants. Stay and play a while in one of Old Town's two parks, White Street Park and Playtown Suwanee.
